Japanese Colour Schemes

Different cultures have different concepts of colour and what goes well together. The Japanese name their colours after things in nature that have those colours. Kimonos very rarely contain colours not seen in nature, except for metalics.

Watashi to Tokyo has a great article on Japanese colour schemes and colour chips that are traditional.

From another Japanese website comes the "mother of all colour charts". It's called the Colour Scheme Encyclopedia and contains all sorts of colour charts sorted by everything from the most appropriate colour schemes for government offices!!!

Having Trouble Picking Colour Combos?

If you feel you can't trust your colour sense, there's a handy little online tool called "Colour Scheme Chooser".

It allows you to pick from all the standard colour schemes: complimentary, split, analogous, triadic, etc.

Even if you are good with colour. This can help give you some new ideas!
